Julia Ackley continues great defense

McFarland coach Tommy Moriarty is pleased with the way senior Julia Ackley is playing for the Spartans right now.

Ackley finished with 13 kills and 21 digs, her eighth match of at least 10 digs this season, in an 18-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-13 victory over Portage on Oct. 1.

She leads the team with 232 digs and 310 serve receptions, and second on the team with 203 kills. When Ackley had 21 kills and 21 digs against Reedsburg on Sept. 26, it was the first time in Spartans history a player had a 20-20 match.

“While Julia is slightly undersized as an outside hitter, her athleticism, tenacity and unrelenting effort make her brutal for opponents to play against," Moriarty said. “She is constantly flying around the court, getting kills and passing as many balls as she can.”

Rebecca Rings plays big

“Rebecca was outstanding in first contact this week,” Johnson said. “And hitting efficiency (was good). Her leadership is coming through more and more.”

Gracyn Meyer was “so important"

5 high school volleyball stars of the week: Oct. 8 edition (8)

Senior Gracyn Meyer had seven kills in Sauk Prairie’s 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9 victory over Mount Horeb on Oct. 1.

“She was huge,” Sauk Prairie coach Allison Steinmetz said.

She led the team with six blocks on the night.

“Her blocking was so important, as was her ability to hit the quick ball,” Steinmetz said. “She’s a solid player, both offensively and defensively, but where her huge wingspan, we rely on her block.”

Shadavien Johnson gives fits

5 high school volleyball stars of the week: Oct. 8 edition (9)

Madison East’s Shadavien Johnson found open spots for 21 kills to keep the Purgolders competitive in a 13-25, 26-24, 15-25, 15-25 loss to Madison Edgewood on Sept. 30.

“Anything north of 15 kills is a really good game, north of 20 is considered dominant or elite,” Madison East coach Matt Filteau said. “Shadavien hits the ball harder than anyone in the Big Eight, and really started to use multiple tools to dissect the Edgewood defense besides his power; tips and rolls to open court space. His ability to be an effective weapon from both the front and back row stood out last night.”

East won the second set thanks to the seven kills from Johnson. Johnson also had seven digs, two aces and two blocks on the night.
